چکیده

View synthesis involves use of existing images to generate virtual images at varying viewpoints. With the advancements in digital media, virtual view generation has gained much attention. It is widely being used in computer generated animations where it is required to transform one object into another, or to observe the same object from a different point of view. A variety of techniques exist, ranging from 3D modeling to 2D image-based rendering each offering a different set of advantages and limitations. In most of the work on view synthesis, the target viewpoints are usually restricted within the scope of real images and determined using interpolation. This paper describes a methodology to extend the concepts of interpolation to be able to generate new images at viewpoints that are not bound to be present within the virtual boundaries of reference views. Extrapolation has always been a prime method of predicting future states and behavior of elements and processes in all fields of technology. The focus of this paper is on the generation of virtual views using extrapolation, thus allowing surpassing the boundary that has always constrained the virtual viewpoints to lie within the scope of existing views. Special scenarios have also been identified, e.g. planar scenes, pure rotational camera motion etc. that allow faster view generation while avoiding the cumbersome and expensive computations. The paper is based on the PhD research of the author, whose thesis was successfully defended.

Image-based Rendering of Complex Scenes from a Multi-Camera Rig

Image-based rendering is a method to synthesize novel views from a set of given real images. This contribution describes two methods to extrapolate novel views of complex scenes with occlusions and large depth discontinuities from images of a moving uncalibrated multi-camera rig. The real camera viewpoints are calibrated from the image data and dense depth maps are estimated for each real view....

Panoramic Spherical Video - The Space Ball

Techniques for synthesizing panoramic scenes are widespread. Such a scene can be automatically created from multiple displaced images by aligning and overlapping them using an image registration technique. The ability to generate panoramic scenes has many applications including the generation of virtual reality backgrounds, model-based video compression, and object recognition. These techniques...

Automatic 3D view Generation from a Single 2D Image for both Indoor and Outdoor Scenes

Image based video generation paradigms have recently emerged as an interesting problem in the field of robotics. This paper focuses on the problem of automatic video generation of both indoor and outdoor scenes. Automatic 3D view generation of indoor scenes mainly consist of orthogonal planes and outdoor scenes consist of vanishing point. The algorithm infers frontier information directly from ...

From the Virtual to the RealWorld: Referring to Objects in Real-World Spatial Scenes

Predicting the success of referring expressions (RE) is vital for real-world applications such as navigation systems. Traditionally, research has focused on studying Referring Expression Generation (REG) in virtual, controlled environments. In this paper, we describe a novel study of spatial references from real scenes rather than virtual. First, we investigate how humans describe objects in op...

A Stereoscopic Image-Based Approach to Virtual Environment Navigation

Image-Based Virtual Environments are alternative approaches for virtual reality applications to generate real world scenes in virtual environments with low computation cost. This paper presents an approach to creating interactive image-based virtual reality environments in stereoscopic modes using binocular stereoscopic omnidirectional image sequences. The Omnidirectional Binocular Stereoscopic...
